Nursing

The Nursing and Allied Health department at Spoon River College offers many opportunities for a rewarding career in the nursing field. The SRC Nursing program features an option of completing a practical nursing certificate at the end of the first year, affording the individual eligibility to take the Practical Nursing licensing examination. Students may continue to the second year of the program, and after completion, are eligible to receive an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) and to write the NCLEX-RN examination for licensure. The College also offers a Nursing Assistant course that is designed to prepare individuals for entry-level positions in the health care field.

Nature of Work

Nursing is a dynamic combination of art and science applied to meeting the health care needs of individuals and families in the communities in which we live. Nurses promote wellness, assist with the restoration and maintenance of health, and provide comfort to the dying. Nurses primarily work in inpatient and outpatient departments, care centers, and social assistance agencies, as well as in-home healthcare, educational, and employment services. This program is part of the Health Science Career Cluster.

Program Accreditation

The Nursing program is fully approved by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation. Graduates are eligible to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) and may apply for licensure to practice nursing as a Registered Nurse (RN). Those whom successfully complete the NUR 145 course are then eligible to take the NCLEX-LPN and may apply for licensure to practice as a Practical Nurse (LPN). In 2018, our NCLEX passing rates were: NCLEX-PN 100% and NCLEX-RN 93%.

This nursing education program is a candidate for accreditation by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing.

Admission Criteria

Graduation from high school or equivalent.
Basic skills assessment – Take the college-required Accuplacer Test.
Biology – Must meet the prerequisites for BIO 200, BIO 201, and BIO 206 – High School Biology within the past five years, or BIO 101, BIO 105, or BIO 155 with a grade of “C” or better.
Take the pre-nursing test (ATI-TEAS).
A physical with immunizations, including a two-step TB test, and drug screening (date of drug testing addressed in acceptance letter) is required after acceptance into the program.
A non-fingerprint background check will be required after acceptance into the program. High school students interested in applying to the nursing program should inquire at the guidance office of their high school. Math, biology, and chemistry should be included in their studies as preparatory course work for the SRC nursing program and to meet its entrance requirements.

**Required for LPNs admitted to the second year of Nursing program who have been out of school and have not just completed the first year of nursing. LPNs seeking advanced standing may qualify upon meeting the following: evidence of graduation from State approved PN program academic transcripts on file at SRC 2.0 gpa in required course work copy of current LPN license proof of CPR status for Health Care Provider completion of NLN-ACE testing with qualifying scores physical with immunizations, including a two-step TB test are required prior to entry into the program a non-fingerprint background check will be required after acceptance into the program

Nursing Pre-Entrance Testing

Pre-Entrance Testing is currently available through Student Services. Group test dates are also available September - March through the Nursing Department. To register for a group test date, complete the Nursing Pre-Testing Form located at the bottom of this web page. Both tests below can be taken a maximum of 3 times per calendar year with a minimum of 30 days between testing attempts. Test scores are valid for 2 years.

ATI-TEAS (no current nursing license) for Generic Nursing Students $65.00 fee

It is preferred that TEAS testing is done as a group test (please refer to the schedule below).
If you are unable to attend any of the scheduled group dates, testing can be done on a walk-in basis from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Monday thru Friday in the Student Services Department at all four campus locations of Canton, Havana, Macomb and Rushville.
If you plan to test with the group, please register by filling out the below form.

You will be required to show ID and payment receipt from SRC Business Office prior to testing.
You are not allowed to have a calculator or cell phone in the testing room.
Testing may take 2½ hours to complete.

NLN-ACE I Test (have current IL PN license) for Advanced Standing Students $65.00 fee

It is preferred that NLN-ACE I testing is done as a group test (please refer to the schedule below.
If you are unable to attend any of the scheduled group dates, it can be done as a walk-in basis from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Monday thru Friday in the Student Services Department at all four campus locations of Canton, Havana, Macomb and Rushville.
